Who is responsible for the act of sexual molestation of a child?
Perpetrators have (the) sole responsibility

Children a do not realizs that the only persons responsible for the abuse are perpetrators. A lot of non-offending adults do not realise this either, and children may be blamed and stigmatised for being sexually abused. There are many aspects of child sexual abuse that many parents and other non-offending adults do not understand.
Nothing about children causes sexual abuse. All children are vulnerable to being sexually abused.

Those sexually abused have the misfortune to be in the presence of perpetrators with no protection. Children with disabilities are especially vulnerable.

In the long run, survivors benefit when others hold perpetrators responsible and accountable for their behaviours.
Sexual abuse harms children

Being forced into sexual activities harms children no matter how old or young perpetrators are. Through being sexually abused, children learn from their own experience that what they want does not count and that they themselves do not count. Thus, their autonomy and sense of self-worth are harmed. Their sexuality and sexual identities may be affected as well.

Next week, we shall visit the case of a father who sexually abuses his 12- year-old daughter and gets her pregnant.
What are the risks involved for the child, the unborn child, society and the future? It is vital and with all sense of urgency that we need to address this silent epidemic. Send in your comments and contributions today.

News

Sexual assault increases risk for psychosis and schizophrenia

Traumatic sexual incidents may precipitate mental health problems years after the assault. New research from the University of Ulster’s Psychological Research Institute suggests that sexual trauma can play a role in the development of psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia, even up to 10 years after the original event.

In addition to the risk of development of psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia, victims of sexual trauma may be even further disposed to other psychological problems, as victims often have a propensity to move away from the area the iancident took place. This often removes them from family and other social support networks.

These findings may be helpful in providing insights for evaluating patients with schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders for a history of sexual trauma, and in developing targeted interventions and therapies.child molester and shatnez checker rabbi yudel nussbaum from YOBhttp://www.vanguardngr.com/2010/07/12/what-child-sexual-abuse-means-to-abusers-and-child-survivors-3/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28305689.post-15466730462515982142010-07-22T15:04:30.809-07:002010-07-22T15:04:30.809-07:00http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/editorial_opinio...http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/editorial_opinion/editorials/articles/2010/07/21/in_abuse_cases_church_rules_arent_enough__call_police/

GLOBE EDITORIAL
In abuse cases, church rules aren’t enough — call police

July 21, 2010

EVEN WHEN a religious institution has its own procedures for punishing wayward clergy, the sexual abuse of children is a serious crime that warrants prosecution by civil authorities. But when the Vatican revised its disciplinary system for sex-abuser priests, it missed the opportunity to take an unambiguous stand against pedophiles and those who protect them. The new rules do not order church officials to report allegations of sex abuse to the police, nor do they establish even internal penalties for bishops who cover up cases of abuse. Until the church adopts a zero-tolerance policy, justice cannot be served, and the worldwide uproar over the church’s handling of such cases will continue.

At least two of the changes announced last week were beneficial. First, the church will be quicker to conduct internal trials of priests accused of abusing children. Second, a new rule doubles the statute of limitations for abuse cases to 20 years from the victim’s 18th birthday. Both of these reforms will streamline the church’s process for identifying and prosecuting cases of sexual abuse.

Still, the new rules fail to bring the worldwide church’s practices in line with those recently adopted by US bishops; in the United States, priests who are found guilty of even one case of pedophilia are to be forced out, and bishops who learn of sexual abuse allegations against priests must notify authorities. A Vatican spokesman said last week that the new rules are meant to deal only with the church’s internal procedures. This narrow approach comes off as grudging, and it presumes a level of confidence in the hierarchy’s ability to handle abuse cases. Yet in a number of countries, as in Massachusetts, the church’s credibility has suffered amid reports that officials ignored instances of abuse, transferred known pedophile priests from parish to parish, and kept information from parishioners and law enforcement.

Abuses by clergy aren’t unique to the Catholic Church. The ongoing sexual abuse case against Stanley Z. Levitt, a rabbi and former teacher at the Maimonides School in Brookline who is now accused of molesting a handful of boys in the 1970s, shows that different types of religious hierarchies often respond to troubling accusations in the same hushed manor. Even after questions were raised about Levitt’s fitness to teach young boys, he was allowed to move to Philadelphia and, worse yet, to be in contact with children there. It took over three decades for charges to finally be brought against him.

The possibility that some clergy members will use their spiritual roles to gain access to minors makes it all the more vital that the Catholic Church and other religious institutions cooperate with civil authorities. The clergy do not operate outside of the criminal law. Likewise, the institutions they work for should enact policies that operate in concert with the legal system, and within the bounds of common sense and decency.Marynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28305689.post-48278742776043423952010-07-21T10:31:43.331-07:002010-07-21T10:31:43.331-07:00FDNY EMT Accused of 5 Sexual Assaults in Brooklyn

Armed with a knife and a gun, the suspect forced a 14-year-old girl behind an apartment building and tried to sexually assault her, police say. The victim fought back and the suspect fled.

Pascall is also accused of sodomizing an 11-year-old girl on the morning of July 11 in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Police say the girl was walking her dog around 8 a.m. when she was forced into an elevator in the Kingsborough Houses at gunpoint.

Police say Pascall may have used an elevator key provided to EMTs.

The latest incident occurred Monday. As the leader in the free world for human rights enforcement, the United States is uniquely positioned to enact authoritative measures, including having the State Department add the Holy See to its list of countries to be monitored for human rights abuses.

The Clinton administration enacted the International Religious Freedom Act, which entailed a yearly religious liberty audit of foreign countries. Similarly, there should be a yearly child protection audit of foreign countries that have employees in the United States.

Another promising path that the president and Congress should consider is amending the Mann Act, which outlaws the movement of people, including children, for purposes of illegal sex. A section should be added to include prohibiting the movement of employees known or suspected to have sexually abused children.

Since the huge cover-up of the church’s secret handling of child sexual abuse by its priests first broke in 2002, thousands of victims and millions who are rightfully and sufficiently outraged have demanded accountability. But the American government has been slow to react. This is the year that our federal government needs to stand up for children.

Marci A. Child sexual abuse is an especially complicated form of abuse because of its layers of guilt and shame. It’s important to recognize as this column has discussed many a time, that sexual abuse doesn’t always involve body contact.

Exposing a child to sexual situations or material is sexually abusive, whether or not touching is involved.

While news stories of sexual predators are scary, what is even more frightening is that sexual abuse usually occurs at the hands of someone the child knows and should be able to trust—most often close relatives and people in a position of authority over the child and whom the child and family trust.

And contrary to what many believe, it’s not just girls who are at risk. Boys and girls both suffer from sexual abuse. In fact, sexual abuse of boys may be underreported due to shame and stigma.

Aside from the physical damage that sexual abuse can cause, the emotional component is powerful and far-reaching for children.

Sexually abused children are tormented by shame and guilt. They may feel that they are responsible for the abuse or somehow brought it upon themselves. This can lead to self-loathing and sexual problems as they grow older—often either excessive promiscuity or an inability to have intimate relations.

The history of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) has been linked to increased risk for long-term consequences on the lives of survivors (e.g., Adams-Tucker, 1982; Briere & Runtz, 1988; Brooks, 1983; Browne & Finkelhor, 1986; Peters, 1988; Spaccarelli, 1994; Trickett & Putnam, 1993). For example, CSA survivors are more likely to experience PTSD related symptoms such as moments of increased arousal and extreme affective reactivity and, alternatively, a general predisposition toward numbing of responsiveness including feelings and affects (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 1994).

The shame of sexual abuse makes it very difficult for children to come forward. They may worry that others won’t believe them, will be angry with them, or that it will split their family apart.

Because of these difficulties, false accusations of sexual abuse are not common, so if a child confides in you, PLEASE kindly take him or her seriously. There are many reasons for this hesitancy. One does not think he or she will be believed. One thinks he is alone. If the abuse was reported to the Church, it was often rejected out-of-hand. Sometimes the accused abuser was even sent to another parish where the predatory practices continued.

Be aware that there have been thousands of victims of clergy abuse. The anonymous Aleinu Marital Satisfaction Survey, which took place from January to March 2009, targeted the Orthodox community and focused upon the many facets of marital satisfaction and dissatisfaction. The survey was coordinated in conjunction with Aleinu Family Resource Center, a program of the Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles and the Rabbinical Council of California. Raw data were collected by OTX, a California institute of the behavioral sciences. The study expanded upon a similar project conducted in March 2008 by Deborah Fox, director of Aleinu Family Resource Center at Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles.

The OU survey, organized by Frank Buchweitz, OU national director, community services and special projects, broadened the original inquiry, with questions regarding the impact of such issues as at-risk children, infertility and birth control. The OU, which has sponsored numerous marriage retreats on both the East and West Coasts, will use the results to create new programming aimed at strengthening marriages and families within the frum community.

Dr. Eliezer Schnall, assistant professor of psychology at Yeshiva College, and Dr. David Pelcovitz, Straus professor of psychology and education at Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education and Administration, both of whom were responsible for analyzing the data, explain the findings and their implications in the pages ahead.

Analysis & Interpretation:What the Data Reveal
(Excerpted from remarks made by Dr. Eliezer Schnall at a presentation delivered at the Orthodox Union in November 2009.)

The survey attracted 3,760 respondents from around the world, a large number relative to similar studies of marriage and family. The vast majority of the respondents— 83 percent—were from North America, mostly from the United States. Some 11 percent were from Israel. Of the total respondents, 59 percent were women and 41 percent were men.

When asked to rate their marriages overall as “Excellent,” “Very Good,” “Good,” “Fair” or “Poor,” 72 percent of men and 74 percent of women rated their marriages as “Very Good” or better. In contrast, only a small minority— about 13 percent—responded that their marriages were “Fair” or “Poor.” Indeed, many studies—for example, data from the National Survey of Families and Households—indicate that frequent participants in religious services or activities experience greater marital contentment, and may even have lower risk of divorce, compared with others. In fact, almost 80 percent (of both men and women) in our sample said that their spouses meet their expectations. Furthermore, in a similar question, respondents were asked whether they would marry the same person if they could “turn back the clock,” knowing all that they do now. Most wives and husbands will be happy to hear that so many (74 percent) of their spouses would marry them all over again if they could...emunahmagazine.comhttp://www.emunahmagazine.com/do-frum-couples-have-happier-marriages-2021/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28305689.post-83203175503370246932010-07-15T12:34:26.325-07:002010-07-15T12:34:26.325-07:00www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/northnorthwest/c...www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/northnorthwest/ct-met-skokie-plane-crash-0715-20100715,0,364121.story
chicagotribune.com
Family 'stunned' by fatal plane crash
Grandfather, three granddaughters die after plane splits in half

By Lisa Black, Richard Wronski and Serena Maria Daniels, Tribune reporters

July 15, 2010
Advertisement

With his grandchildren visiting from Israel, Skokie resident Moshe Menora was eager to share his passion for flying, taking four of them on a trip to Mackinac Island.

But something went wrong shortly after he took off to return from Michigan, and the plane crashed on the edge of an interstate highway, killing Menora, 73, and three granddaughters, authorities said Wednesday.

"We are stunned by it," said Menora's sister-in-law, Chana Kovalsky, 71, of Chicago. But he acknowledged that one factor to be investigated was whether the plane was too heavy for takeoff after taking on 60 gallons of fuel.

"It is God's way and we will just have to accept it," Kovalsky said.

Tribune reporter Jeremy Gorner contributed to this report.

lblack@tribune.com

rwronski@tribune.com

sedaniels@tribune.com9 days tragedyhttp://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/northnorthwest/ct-met-skokie-plane-crash-0715-20100715,0,364121.storynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28305689.post-69378827878015912232010-07-14T11:45:07.755-07:002010-07-14T11:45:07.755-07:00Psychologist and intern failed to report child sex...Psychologist and intern failed to report child sex abuse

* By Kate Sikora
* From: The Daily Telegraph
* July 14, 2010 3:11AM

A LEADING psychologist and his former intern have been banned for three years after failing to report child sexual abuse by one of their patients.

Dr James Donnelly, former head of psychology at Sydney Children's Hospital, has been ordered to stop practising for three years from next month.

The state's medical watchdog upheld a complaint that he and junior fellow psychologist Kerri Dene failed to notify authorities one of their patients was abusing his 10-year-old daughter.

They were working at the University of New England, Armidale, in 2003 when a patient admitted molesting his daughter.

Ms Dene was treating the father but, after consulting with her supervisor Dr Donnelly, they decided not to notify authorities.

The NSW Psychologists Tribunal heard Ms Dene believed the child was not at risk as the father had voluntarily admitted the abuse and had stopped.

Dr Donnelly and Ms Dene agreed that it would be more beneficial to keep the father under their care and try to help the girl, rather than report them to DOCS, the tribunal heard.

It was not until 2005 that Ms Dene finally contacted authorities, who then investigated.

The father later admitted to authorities that he had a history of sexual abuse dating back 43 years. He also admitted assaulting his daughter since she was about four years old, the Tribunal heard.

"Having been told Mr A [the father] was distressed he had committed a 'boundary violation' by giving a massage to [his daughter] at night, wherein his hand moved or brushed over her pubic area, it was incumbent upon Dr Donnelly to undertake further investigations if he was to appropriately consider the matter," the tribunal said.yudi kolko's therapistnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28305689.post-38173073437355902132010-07-14T11:27:29.280-07:002010-07-14T11:27:29.280-07:00Rabbi suspected of sexual exploitation to return t...Rabbi suspected of sexual exploitation to return to educators role
Four years after abruptly leaving his post as head of a prestigious Jerusalem yeshiva, Rabbi Mordechai Elon has agreed to lead weekly Torah sessions at a major Tel Aviv synagogue.

In February, the rabbinical forum Takana, a watchdog aimed at preventing sexual exploitation, said on its website that its probe showed Elon had committed "acts that contravene the values of sanctity and morals" and had sexually taken advantage of students at Jerusalem's Hakotel and Horev yeshivas.Chutzpah!http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/news/rabbi-suspected-of-sexual-exploitation-to-return-to-educators-role-1.301800noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28305689.post-62378094264622199732010-07-14T11:20:56.298-07:002010-07-14T11:20:56.298-07:00Right on target Chanina!Right on target Chanina!exposemolestershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02097300261898413798noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28305689.post-62138570619315364462010-07-12T22:21:17.248-07:002010-07-12T22:21:17.248-07:00Now that it's the 9 days we are saddened by th...Now that it's the 9 days we are saddened by the destruction of the 2 Bet Hamikdash.

By adhering to many mourning restrictions we acknowledge that fateful anniversary.

We are so sentimental as Jews that we celebrate the yomim tovim but while at the same time shed tears for the low-lights of Jewish history.

Let this time serve a lesson that child-sexual molestation impairs the physical and spiritual soul for a lifetime.

Don't make believe that you grow your beard, refrain from listening to music, live with restrictions that are uncomfortable because you're an upstanding Jew when you're really not.

If you're of the same mindset of the Lakewood community who tried to intimidate a witness into not testifying against a Jewish child molester, then even if you don't shave or take a shower during the three weeks or take on other stringency - it is worthless efforts in the eyes of Hashem.

You're maiming God's child but yet you show him you love him by going to a Tisha B'av Shiur; what you think Hashem is stupid?

Think about it folks. Sontchi said the parishes were also entitled to file claims against the diocese because they had added money to the investment account.

“This is a great victory for all the survivors of sexual abuse in the diocese,” said Thomas Neuberger, an attorney for sex-abuse victims who have sued the diocese and some of its parishes.

The diocese filed bankruptcy in October with plans to settle lawsuits by current and former parishioners who say they were sexually molested by priests. As a result, sexual exploitation and trafficking became rampant among that population, a population existing in the shadows.

In the past 15 years, a number of studies and research have shed light on those children and young people. A University of Pennsylvania study in 2000, updated in 2002, estimated that more than 325,000 children in the U.S. are at risk for sexual exploitation; UNICEF reports that every two minutes a child is prepared for sexual exploitation around the world; and the National Incidence Studies of Missing, Abducted, Runaway and Throwaway Children estimated more than 1 million runaways in 1999, and that number continues to grow. According to the National Runaway Switchboard, one out of every three teens on the street will be lured into prostitution within 48 hours of leaving home.

A group of men and women on both sides of the state line have organized with Steven Wagner, president of Renewal Forum, a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit dedicated toward the abolishment of human trafficking and victim restoration, to research and lay the groundwork to make Kansas City a model city in the fight against trafficking and the sex trade and a provider of services to area youth and child victims..Rabbi Ahron Shlechterhttp://catholickey.org/index.php3?gif=news.gif&mode=view&issue=20100709&article_id=6342noreply@blogger.com
