Bond set in Fla. for author of pedophile guide
Phillip Greaves of Pueblo is charged with violating the state's obscenity law, a third-degree felony that could land him in prison for five years.
The 47-year-old was arrested Monday in Colorado, but Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd claims jurisdiction in the case because Greaves sold and mailed a copy of his book to undercover deputies in Florida who had requested a copy.
Court-appointed public defender Francis Solorzano, assigned because Greaves could not afford an attorney, first asked Judge John Kirkland to drop the case.
"Any finding of probable cause would tend to have a chilling effect on free speech," Solorzano said. "What we're dealing here is mere words. There are no images in the book."
But Kirkland said the judge who signed the arrest warrant had already found probable cause and he could not override that decision.
The self-published book - "The Pedophile's Guide to Love and Pleasure: a Child-lover's Code of Conduct" - caused a flap when it showed up on Amazon in November. It was later removed from the site.
Greaves, who has no criminal record, writes in the book that pedophiles are misunderstood, as the word literally means to love a child. He adds it is only a crime to act on sexual impulses toward children, and offers advice that purportedly allows pedophiles to abide by the law.
Judd said he was incensed when he heard about the book and that no one had arrested Greaves for selling it. The book, Judd said, included first-person descriptions of sexual encounters, purportedly written from a child's point of view.
During the hearing Wednesday, Greaves' attorney asked Kirkland to reduce or eliminate the $15,000 bond.
"It is 15 times the standard bond schedule for a third-degree felony," Solorzano said. "That should be considered excessive."
But prosecutor Brad Copley said the state believes the $15,000 bond "is on the low side."
Kirkland decided to keep the bond at $15,000. If Greaves does post it, he must stay in the state of Florida, not use a computer and not have contact with anyone under 18.
Solorzano said it is unlikely Greaves will be able to raise the bail money. He is being held at the Polk County Jail and told local media on Tuesday that he "only has sex with grown-ups" and that writing and selling his book falls under his constitutional right to free speech.
He is charged under Florida's obscenity law, which prohibits the "distribution of obscene material depicting minors engaged in conduct harmful to minors."

Pope, Gedolim reflect on the 70's
He died early Tuesday, and his daughter says the family is relieved.
"The world is that much safer because he is not here," said Martha Juchnowski, his daughter and one of his victims. "I think I can speak for my family: There is a sense of relief. This has been a horrible thing that has been hanging over our heads all our lives."
Sypnier, the oldest inmate imprisoned by the state, died of natural causes at 12:23 a.m. Tuesday in a prison medical unit, according to Linda M. Foglia, spokeswoman for the Department of Correctional Services.
Before he was sent back to prison in April on a parole violation, Sypnier, weeping, told The Buffalo News, "I don't want to go back. I'd rather die."
As word spread of his death, no tears were being shed for the man who authorities said sexually attacked children for decades in Buffalo and later in the Town of Tonawanda.
"I hope this brings a little bit of comfort to his family and those he hurt so deeply. You can't go back and change things," said the Rev. Terry J. King, whose organization, Saving Grace Ministries, assists ex-convicts.
Sypnier had received temporary shelter in King's East Side halfway house after he was released on parole in the fall of 2009.
"We did not want him to hurt again or victimize anyone. Certainly he had hurt enough people through his lifetime," King said. "It is sad all the way around."
Last Wednesday, Sypnier's health began to fail, and he was transferred from Groveland Correctional Facility in Livingston County to the Coxsackie Correctional Facility's regional medical unit in Greene County, south of Albany.
A prison chaplain spoke with Sypnier in his final days, but Juchnowski said she was not aware that he had expressed any remorse.

History says new sexual abuse scandals are on the horizon for 2011.

Facing facts
NEWS OF THE YEAR | At the end of a difficult year, the Roman Catholic Church reflects on its worldwide sexual abuse scandals | Alisa Harris
Sexual abuse scandals continued to fester in the Roman Catholic Church this year, with accounts of abuse and cover-ups in Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, and Ireland. Five hundred victims came forward in Belgium, including the nephew of the Bishop of Bruges, who resigned in disgrace. Five bishops in Ireland stepped down after they had covered up scandals. As the year comes to a close, Church leaders have been reflecting on the hardships, but victims want more than reflection—they want action.
During his Christmas speech, Pope Benedict XVI noted that it had been a difficult year for the Church, which faced “humiliation” as hundreds of sex abuse victims named priests as perpetrators. “We must ask ourselves what was wrong in our proclamation, in our whole way of living the Christian life, to allow such a thing to happen,” he said, adding that part of the blame lay with a 1970s culture that did not believe in evil or good and saw pedophilia as “fully in conformity with man and even children.”
Speaking before a Belgian parliamentary inquiry a day after the pope’s end-of-year speech, a disgraced Church leader issued a warning for Roman Catholics. Former Cardinal Godfried Danneels, who admitted that he helped protect the Bishop of Bruges after he abused his nephew, told the Church “to look its dark side in the eyes” and to become more transparent and open. Victims responded by telling him to lead the way. Lieve Halsberghe, the Belgium leader for the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), said in a statement that Danneels may know more about abuse than any other person in the Catholic hierarchy: “So instead of telling others what to do, he needs to take his own advice and ‘come clean’ now.”
The pain experienced by victims became especially apparent this year. In Belgium, a report revealed that sexual abuse led to 19 attempted and 13 successful suicides. In May, 43-year-old American William Lynch allegedly lured a priest from his California retirement home and severely beat him. Lynch pleaded “not guilty” and said during his trial he would introduce evidence that the priest sexually abused him and his brother 35 years ago.
The pope has received his share of criticism for the way he handled sex abuse cases years ago when he was archbishop of Munich and the prefect in Rome for the office that dealt with clerical sexual misconduct. In one instance, Benedict approved the transfer of a priest who resumed parish duties despite being convicted of sexual abuse.

http://www.examiner.com/crime-in-newark/furor-over-ban-by-rabbis-of-orthodox-website-that-reports-on-child-sex-abuse
A backlash has followed the decision by a group of rabbis to ban their followers from advertising, viewing or even patronizing the advertisers of an Orthodox Jewish news blog that reports on sexual abuse within their communities. Thirty six rabbis have condemned VosIzNeias.com as sinful, and the response has been sharp.
“For many of the victims of abuse I know, the ban has created feelings of being re-traumatized,” Rabbi Asher Lipner told the North Jersey website CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “Most survivors feel that the community's stifling their voices has been more damaging emotionally than the actual molestation they have suffered.”
The communities for years have sought to handle such incidents within their own ranks, calling to mind the behavior of the Catholic Church. More recently, however, families of victims have begun turning to the secular justice system -- including a family from Passaic County that got results.
It’s been a slow evolution, but even those in “ultra-Orthodox” communities in Brooklyn, Rockland County and at the Jersey Shore have begun to come forward. It’s not oversell to say this is a watershed moment in the history of the ultra-Orthodox community.
This pleases those like Lipner, an abuse survivor and vice-president of the Jewish Board of Advocates for Children, who says that “forbidden criticism of rabbis and immodest speech… have been used for years to silence victims,” which he says only “triggers flashbacks and reawakens feelings of betrayal.”
The movement has clearly rankled many community leaders, however.
After scrutinizing this article for any inconsistencies or falsifications, it was apparent my hunch proved me correct, once again. The "Popular rabbi" biased title doe not bode well for the author, except for the data dealing with rabbi's defense attorneys insinuation their client was framed.

By Eli Ashkenazi
A popular rabbi from a community in the north of Israel was arrested for allegedly molesting minors, it was revealed on Friday after a gag order on the case was lifted.
The rabbi, age 60, was arrested on Thursday after he requested to leave the country for a celebration of a famous rabbi. The rabbi's name and certain details about the case are still under a gag order.
The rabbi is suspected of sodomizing a fourteen-year-old girl three years ago, as well as molesting additional minors, both male and female, over the course of this past year.
Police have been investigating this case for the last several months. The investigation has been headed by police-superintendent Ariyeh Alkobi, who says that there have been three charges of molestation uncovered thus far. Police say there are other minors who were also molested, but they have not yet filed formal complaints with police.
Alkobi said that the accusations against the rabbi took many by surprise, as he was considered a very popular figure in his community, where he has been living for over 40 years. In his community, he helped found academic institutions and non-profit organizations, and had a reputation of always being available to help advise and counsel people.
The rabbi's defense attorneys claim that people in the community are going "home to home, trying to get people to file complaints against the rabbi." They say the claims are a conspiracy created by a few people who are angry about being fired from their positions in different institutions that the rabbi ran.
The rabbis remand was extended by a week on Friday morning.

Jack Straw, the former Home Secretary, provoked controversy when he said that white girls were seen as “easy meat” by some Pakistani men.
Although some public figures condemned his comments as offensive, others said it was right that the matter had been addressed.
Mohammed Liaqat, 28, and Abid Saddique, 27, were jailed on Friday for a series of rapes and sexual assaults on young girls as young as 12 around Derby.
The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (Ceop) was involved in the police investigation in which led to their convictions.
Yesterday, the Home Office said Ceop, which is affiliated to the Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca), was looking into all aspects of grooming.
Two Jews come to the Rabbi to settle a dispute. The first Jew complains about the other, and the Rabbi says, ``You're right.'' Then the other Jew makes his claim, to which the Rabbi says, ``You're right.'' The Rabbi's wife, who overhears this from the kitchen, asks, ``How can they both be right?'' The Rabbi responds with a sigh, ``You're right too.''
It seems that everybody is right in their explanations as to why the peace process in the Middle East is at a stalemate.

Pedophile priests flourished for decades and nobody even batted an eyelash or thought it wise to perhaps direct their full attention to the crisis. I'm still trying to come to grips with how a mass scale cover-up of such magnitude can go undetected, unnoticed and unscathed for as long as it did. And what, if any, repercussions has the archdiocese sustained that would make it right again for survivors?
What are they going to do, put it in reverse and go back in time?
In comparison, what aggravates me most about Jewish pedophiles is not that they EXIST, it is because of the unwritten code by many facets in the politically connected orthodox communities prohibiting the report of such conduct to the law.
So what if nussbaum works for us. Despite his fetish for prepubescent boys, he happens to be a gevaldick mechanech.
My intentions are leshem shomayim. I don't want Nussbuam ending up like Jaime Elvis Elizondo.

A local man was beaten to death in prison just three months into a 30-year-prison term for assaulting a 5-year-old girl.
Baruch Hashem for New York's statute of limitations. The goyim sometimes do come up with good laws. What a relief! at least I don't have to worry about old victims, only the more recent ones. Let me make a special bracha out loud on this so all of you can answer amen.
this is really stupid where is the proof a crime was committed? from what i see some young girl made accusations thats all.

Torres, 53, was convicted of capital sexual battery last November. A jury found that he had molested a young girl over nearly three years in Hernando County. Four of the nine counts against him required mandatory life sentences.
Nussbaum's talmidim know something is amiss with him, and Nussbaum knows when he looks in the mirror, staring back at him is a perverted scoundrel of the earth, delighted to inflict pain and suffering on others as a means of gratifying his deviant urges.
YOB employs Nussabum, it scares me much. A child predator around children is like candy around children, but obviously sweeping it under the carpet is still the norm in frum circles.
Speaking by Agudah conventions is my favorite time of year. Just one nekuda I feel is missing, too many agudnicks hogging the meat carving stations, salad bars and dessert tables. Are they there to eat or did they come to hear me and other gedolim lecture them on ethics??
Sex Abuse Victim Savagely Attacks Priest
He 'filled my life with rage and bitterness,' says California man
A California man who accused a Catholic priest of sexually abusing him as a child has been arrested after savagely beating the cleric in the lobby of his retirement home, police report. William Lynch, 43, said he dreamed for years of exacting revenge on the man he charged molested him and his brother 35 years ago during church-led camping trips. Lynch confronted the Rev. Jerold Lindner, 65, in his Los Gatos retirement home, and punched him repeatedly when the priest said he didn't recognize him, reports the New York Daily News. "They're saying it was pretty close to beating him to death, " said Lynch's attorney.
Lynch and his brother were paid $625,000 by the Jesuits to settle a sex abuse lawsuit 12 years ago. The boys were 5 and 7 years old when they were raped in the woods and forced to have oral sex with each other, said Lynch's lawyer. The retired priest has been accused of sex assault by a dozen people, including his sister, nieces and nephews. Lindner was released from a local hospital after treatment, and Lynch has been booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. "I wanted to exorcise all of the rage and bitterness he put into me," said Lynch. "He stole my innocence and destroyed my life."
